What is Seattle Good Business Network?

Seattle Good Business Network is an aspiring network of like-minded people who believe that local, independent businesses are the heart and soul of a sustainable local economy.

Our organization is new...ish. Driven by a vision of a network of local businesses that would support each other in building a healthy local economy, and inspired by the work of Sustainable Connections in Bellingham, Christine Hanna and Colleen Butler formed Seattle Good Business Network in early 2010. After discussions with the leadership of BALLE Seattle - an organization that had held the space for a sustainable business network since 2002 - a plan was hatched to re-form BALLE Seattle under new leadership as Seattle Good Business Network.
In 2010, with support from a Steering Committee of local business leaders and a number of experienced advisors, we refined the organization's vision, purpose, and role. In 2011, we launched our anchor program, Think Local, and by mid-year, had over 150 participating businesses. As we build a critical mass of business members, we will develop a cohesive set of activities and programs centered around our mission to connect, promote, and empower local, independent businesses in the stewardship of our place.

The Network is an affiliate of the national Business Alliance for Local Living Economies (BALLE), North America’s fastest growing network of socially responsible businesses, comprised of over 80 community networks representing 22,000 independent business members across 30 U.S. States and Canadian provinces. While each network is unique to its place, collectively BALLE networks create local living economies through the building blocks of independent retail, sustainable agriculture, renewable energy, green building, local zero-waste manufacturing, community capital, independent media, and local arts and culture.

** Straighten up as you go along. Immediately wipe up anything that is spilled, including crumbs; by doing so, you will prevent stains, which are difficult to rmove.

**Use a hard-wearing door mat to keep dirt out of the house. One that fits as a carpet does over the width of the entryway is best.

**You may want to encourage people to take their shoes off, or at least change their shoes, when they come in from outside; the carpet will stay clean longer.

Winter Decorating and to-do list

** Purchase soft warm accessories this season- cashmere throws, velvet slipcovers and flannel bedding.

** Replace lamps that just aren't doing the job of keeping your house bright and light. You can also replace the bulbs with new ones that imitate the sun.

** Plan a family dinner in front of a roaring fireplace, with a hearty stew or piping hot soup. Add fresh baked bread ( I love my breadmaker!) and a warm apple pie crumble. ( one of my favorites below hearty Beef Ball Ragout)

**Go online to a gardening website and purchase items to get your garden ready for spring- bulbs, seeds, garden tools or outdoor furniture don't forget beautiful cushions covered in Sunbrella fabrics.

** For every degree you lower your thermostat in winter, you save about two percent off your heating bill. That can really add up! Buy new shades or drapes that add thermal insulating to your windows to keep the cold out.

Beef Ball Ragout
1 3/4 lb ground chuck
1/3 cup dry bread crumbs
1 egg
4 tsp steak sauce
1 tsp salt
1/4 tsp pepper
2 TBSP marg. or butter
3 Medium potatoes
3 med. carrots
1 TBSP flour
1 cup thin diced onion
1 clove garlic crushed
1 -6oz can mushrooms drained
1 -10 1/2 oz condensed beef bouillon undiluted
1 -8oz can tomato sauce
1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp steak sauce 1/4 tsp Marjoram
1/8 tsp pepper

Make Beef balls: combine chuck,crumbs,egg,4 tsp steak sauce, salt & pepper. Shape into balls. In butter in dutch oven- brown the balls. Reduce heat, cook gently 10 min. Set aside covered. Add onion & garlic to pan drippings, saute til golden. Drain mushrooms, pouring liquid into dutch oven with bouillon, tomato sauce, salt pepper, steak sauce, marjoram. Add potatoes & carrots bring to a boil, reduce heat & simmer covered 40 mins. Mix flour with 2 TBSP water til smooth, add meatballs & mushrooms, bring to boil. Reduce heat and simmer covered 10 mins. or til meatballs are heated thru. about 6 servings..... YUMMY!

Today's tip: Pull the shower curtain closed when not in use, so water can't sit in the folds. Spread towels over two hooks to dry, or hang them on rods instead. Wipe shower walls with a squeegee after every use.

It's a snow day

I love how muffled and quiet it feels on a snow day. I am enjoying being house bound, my son has been very sick since the 9th-- really sick, poor fella! He's 6'2" and not quite 14 years old and I forget myself that he is still my "little boy" since he looks so grown up. He is taking a turn for the better finally!

Never the less I am enjoying a weather imposed vacation- only if I could have gone somewhere warm, sunny and relaxing-- oh well not in the cards so I'm enjoying what we've got SNOW!

But most of all I am grateful for my precious son, Jarod without who I would be lost. He is a gem all 6'2" of him and all his goofy friends--teenagers! He still says "I Love you Momma" everytime he goes out the door--what a treasure!!

I've been out of touch for several weeks as I finally recover from the cold/flu/sinus infection that totally took over the entire month of October. The whole month is a blurr!! I love the fall and the changing of the leaves and that crisp feeling in the air.. and the yummy smells of holiday treats.

We will be having a host of fall and holiday events this season so keep a watch for updates and invites..

My son, Jarod was helping do some cleaning in the backroom recently and we couldn't keep the air gun away from him..... teenagers!!

She is the purrfect person to take care of your furry feline family members. She has created beautiful suites with hand made sweater basket beds, an outdoor enclose with plenty of climbing space and a community play area indoors. It's too delightful!! They even offer transportation to and from the airport after you drop off your kitties.

Part two:

Window treatments can also camouflage an unpleasant view or architecture flaws. If you have an unpleasant view, sheers will soften the image. Maybe you have uneven windows. Valances hung at the same level over the windows can hide that fact and make it more visually appealing.

You can also give the illusion that a small window is larger than it is by framing the window with your window treatments. A room can also be made to look bigger with soft, light or cool colors for your window treatments.

And last but not least, you want your window treatments to be beautiful as well as functional. When choosing the right look for your room, think about the mood you want to create; casual, comfortable, elegant, sophisticated? For a comfortable, casual feel you might choose textured fabrics with a tailored shape. If it is romance you are going for, use an abundance of soft sheer or silky fabrics. Sleek lines and bold colors will give a dramatic, contemporary feel. If you are making over the entire room, it is recommended that you choose your window treatments first and then select your wall color. You don’t want to be limited in your selection by your wall color.

Part one:

Are your windows “naked” or in need of an update? Maybe you have been avoiding window treatments because you don’t know how to get started and are overwhelmed by all of the choices. First things first, you have to know your ultimate goal. There are some features and functions to consider when choosing the right treatments.

Are you looking for privacy? Most blinds and shades will give you privacy. Both horizontal and vertical blinds will allow you to adjust the sunlight and give you privacy at the same time. Shades with a high opacity will also do the trick.

Do you need light control? To completely block out the sun you can choose an opaque, or blackout, shade. Blackout cellular shades work great for blocking out light.

Are you looking for energy efficient treatments to lower your energy bill? If your room gets extremely hot in the summer or drafty in the winter you may consider a triple honeycomb shade that offers a high R-value for good insulation. It will make your room more comfortable and save you money on your energy bill.

Custom Treatments verses Ready-made?

Have you been wondering what to do with your windows? Perhaps you’ve decorated everything else in the house, but your home still doesn’t feel quite finished. Most of us grew up with window treatments in our homes, and when you don’t have them, sometimes you miss them without even knowing it!

But where should you start? Should you go out to a store and buy them right off the shelf? Or should you have a professional come in and help you determine the best solutions for your windows, and get the best product as well?

Here are a couple of things to consider that might help you make your decision:

When it comes to dressing your windows, consider the current quality of the furniture and accessories in your room. Your window treatments need to be of that same quality, or else they might actually “lessen” the feeling of the room.

Custom window treatments are typically made with a higher quality of fabric and lining then ready-made, and better yet, often include interlining. Interlining adds more insulation but especially adds a luxurious look and feel.

There is usually much more attention paid to the details in custom treatments such as pattern matching and placement. Plus, there are more styles and fabrics to choose from so you get the perfect fabric to complement your décor and treatments to fit your windows.

You do not need to spend a small fortune on fabric to have beautiful window treatments. By using professional techniques and a quality lining, even a moderately priced fabric can look fabulous.

You know that saying "when life throws you lemons make lemonade" Well I'm sitting on a semi full of lemons and don't think anyone can drink that much lemonade! Sometimes being a small business owner takes it's toll on you mentally and emotionally --- it can just plain suck!

I'm feeling a little sentimental today as I work thru some difficult issues and look for advice and support. I'm sending a BIG shout-out to all the small business owners that have lended me support over the years, I am so grateful for you all! If you haven't build yourself a network of business owners who you can bounce ideas off of, or who can just listen. Most of us can relate thru similar incidents so the business doesn't have to be exactly the same as yours. We often isolate ourselves as owners thinking we can do it all, everyone needs help from time to time--really we do!

Your friends and family don't always understand the joys, the strains or the pressures of having so many people being dependent (employees, clients, vendors..) on you. So at times it makes it hard to have someone to lean on for support. I have been so blessed over the years to have met so many great business owners without whom I would be lost! It's great to be able to pickup the phone and give someone a call and talk it out with someone who can really understand the issues at hand.

For me as well I wouldn't be here everyday if it weren't for the Lord! He gives me strength everyday to get up, go out and press in when everything seems so impossible

Accent a Wall

How to do it: Create an accent wall in the living room by papering the fireplace or sofa wall with grasscloth or other textured wallpaper. Choose one with a tone that picks up the surrounding paint color. Love this new fabric! Eco-Chic 100% Regenerated Cotton. Supernatural is 100% regenerated cotton with a stone wash finish, offered exclusively by Maxwell Fabrics. Regenerated cotton is a new term being used to describe recycled cotton. The inital yarn is made from left over cotton products, then recycled to create a new regenerated yarn which in turn is woven into a new fabric.

Supernatural has been washed to create a worn denim look with a soft hand and a dynamite colr palette, and since it passes over 30,000 double rubs it can be used for rugged upholstery pieces or vintage chic window and bedding ensembles.

I can't wait to use this new material to slipcover a sofa! Will post pictures when we complete the project the color range is amazing and I love the hand (the way it feels) of the fabric.

Seattle, Wash. - The Master Builder's Association of King And Snohomish Counties honored Anderson Construction Group, Inc. with its 2011 award for  Best Residential Partial House Addition above $600,000 at the Remodeling Excellence Awards (REX) banquet held Saturday, June 18th at The Golf Club at New Castle.

The  judging panel of the annual competition consists of local and national  remodelers, media experts, architects, and interior designers. 

The  REX Awards is an annual event that recognizes the best in local  remodeling projects. These prestigious awards were pursued by hundreds  of worthy general contractors, but handed to only one- Anderson  Construction Group.

We were very excited and honored to take away our third consecutive annual MBA award at the REX Awards this year,"  says D. Chad Quilici, a principal at Anderson Construction Group.  "It  reaffirms what we set out to do each day- build the best project we can  for each and every client."  

This year's winning project was a certified 4-star Built Green partial house addition of an existing home in the Blue Ridge neighborhood of Seattle.

Everything is streaming these days. Instant movies from Netflix, Amazon and others are making movie watching easier and more affordable. Media players such as Roku, Apple TV, Boxee Box, Sony, etc. are inexpensive ($120.00 +/-) and plug into your home internet network. Most come with Wi-Fi as well as hardwire. The Media Player makes it easy to upgrade your system to take advantage of video streaming

If you’ve been thinking about a Blu-Ray player or a new TV, you won’t need a Media Player, because the better models already have Media Players built in. So a $245.00 Blu-Ray player not only gets you the ability to watch High Definition and standard DVDs, but also gives you access to Netflix, Amazon, YouTube and a plethora of others. You may of heard about Steve Jobs recently announcing the i Cloud. Apple is just another company launching Cloud services. Amazon, Microsoft and others are moving in the direction of the Cloud. The Cloud represents information being stored elsewhere, not on your home computer or laptop. The idea is to provide consumers and businesses with access to their documents, pictures, music, etc. from anywhere. Not having to store all this information on your computer, iPad, notebook etc. allows the user to access the information remotely, thereby being able to utilize smaller devices like iPhones, Androids and iPads to get at all that information without having to store it.

We have been helping our customers, for years, with their networks, computers, iPads, iTouches and others to optimize performance and utilize apps that provide easy to use interfaces for controlling audio/video systems, lighting control and others. Today is my second Birthday..

two years ago today June 6th 2009 I suffered an ascending aortic dissection (basically my aortic artery tore into pieces from the inside out where it attaches to my heart) and very nearly died. I truly believe that my survival is a total miracle because people don't typically survive what I went thru. Life for me today looks so different and I have continued to be grateful no-matter what trials, joys or stresses the day may bring.. every day since then has been a treasure. I am thankful that I am here to share the rest of my life with my son, Jarod and of course Junior and Buddy (my other boys).

My message to you all today is to look around and be grateful for everything you have no matter how little or how much it is. Because you never know what tomorrow will bring. I had no clue that day how close to death I was going to come, when I woke and made plans for the day, but by the grace of God I am here today to share the story.
